When the mercury starts dropping in Japan, you can find kumade (ornamental rakes) being sold near temples. It's believed that the kumade bring their owners good fortune. Craftsman are carrying on the tradition, which originated in the Edo Period, but the number of next-generation craftsmen is beginning to decline.
